Dave's DC Cooking: Building a Pure Off-Grid System with Power Queen

I am Dave, and I am using a Power Queen 51.2V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery to build a 55V photovoltaic (PV) DC residential microgrid. This system is designed to provide efficient off-grid power through direct DC distribution, without the need for inverters or traditional MPPT charge controllers.

The idea behind this project was simple: I wanted to run everything on pure DC and create a more streamlined off-grid setup. Instead of following the traditional solar power path — solar panels to charge controller, to battery, to inverter, to appliance — I wanted to reduce unnecessary steps and power my home directly with DC solar energy.

Why I Chose Power Queen

The system now powers several wall outlets in our house, including the kitchen, where we do most of the cooking with DC appliances.

Reliable energy storage is essential for stable operation in a DC residential microgrid, which is why I chose the Power Queen 51.2V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery.

The Power Queen 16S LiFePO4 battery seamlessly integrates into the PV2L microgrid, offers over 4,000 cycles, and its compact design fits perfectly within our DC distribution setup, ensuring reliable and automated power management.

Letting Solar Power Go Straight to the Kitchen

In this system, I can run appliances directly off of PV DC solar panels. The Power Queen battery is switched in via DC contactor if and when it’s needed. Otherwise, the battery stays on standby until power demands exceed PV, or during nighttime or cloudy weather.

There is no charge controller needed, and no inverter either. The cost savings add up, and some of the savings can be allocated to purchasing upgraded copper cables to power the system. With a lower but safer system voltage of 48–55V nominal, the cable size needs to be slightly higher to prevent excess power transmission losses.

How the Battery Supports the System

The Power Queen battery performed exceptionally in this setup. It automatically connects or disconnects based on load and state of charge, helping ensure uninterrupted power to the kitchen and utility room.

Even during high-demand scenarios, the system maintained stability and reliability. While most of the system power can be delivered by direct PV DC power during the day without the battery, having a full battery on standby makes the system more powerful and provides peace of mind.

We also used the Power Queen battery monitor to ensure visibility of the energy storage status, even when the battery was on standby.

Always Ready in the Background: Keeping the System Stable 24×7

The Power Queen 51.2V battery has performed perfectly from day one. The system operates 24×7 providing smooth, clean DC power to our wall outlets to power heaters, cooking and lighting. It does no voltage conversion, and generates no fan noise.

Overall, the battery has proven critical for stable and reliable operation of our 55V PV DC microgrid. Its seamless integration and automated management make it ideal for innovative off-grid applications.

I highly recommend it for anyone implementing DC-based residential microgrids or off-grid systems. I have no regrets about choosing a Power Queen battery to support this system, and hope it continues to serve us well for many years to come.
